Treasures of the Heart

Charlotte brushed the leaves and limbs back from the roots and reached inside the concealed space under the tree.

Her fingers closed around the rusted box and she pulled it out of its secret place.

The hinges of the metal lunchbox squeaked and screeched against her effort as she coaxed it open.

Inside were her treasures… a Plymouth key ring belonging to her father and a broach her mother had worn every day.

A baseball card sat under a matchbox corvette that had belonged to her little brother.

This is all that remained from the fire 25 years ago today.

The Secret in the Trunk

old-trunk

A door that squeaks
At the top of stairs
Moaning when opened
Defending its lair

Wardrobes of old
Rafters with bats
Dust and glass
And old fashioned hats

Boxes from youth
Games and toys
Decades of tales
Memories of joy

Scores of frames
Letters with wax
Ribbons of silk
Fabric on racks

Yet…
A loan trunk sits
By a quaint window sill
Protecting a secret
And may always will

A fable of War
With no one to hear
A time long forgot
Guarded by fear

The conflict of old
Between South and North
When boys became men
And went marching forth

Twin brothers of love
Were lost to each side
One died in pain
The other with pride

One wore blue
The other wore gray
No one knows why
Not to this day
