The Oxymoron Poem

This poem is awesome! I grew up with it too and could not resist sharing it with my friends…Y’all have a goodun! 🙂

Breathing Space

I used to love this silly poem when dad would recite it to us.  He loved poetry and he loved nonsense.  So it was a perfect fit.

Ladies and Gentlemen!  Hobos and Tramps!

Cross eyed mosquitoes and bow legged ants!

Admission is free, please pay at the door.

Pull up a chair and sit on the floor.

I stand here beside you to sit down behind you

To tell you all something I know nothing about.

One fine day in the middle of the night

Two dead men got up to fight.

Back to back they faced one another,

Drew their swords and shot eachother, .

A blind man came to see fair play,

A dumb man came to shout hurray!

A mute onlooker shrieked in fright

And a lame man danced at the ghastly sight.

A deaf policeman heard the noise

And came to arrest the two dead boys.

A paralysed donkey…

    • It is too cute… I only knew part of it as a kid. I had not heard the middle part about the lame man, or the paralyzed donkey! I was laughing too hard so I wanted to give something to everyone else to smile about today! 🙂

      • I had:

One sunny day in the middle of the night
Two dead men got up to fight
Back to back they faced each other
Drew their swords and shot each other
        The blind man saw them
        The deaf man heard them
And the man with no hands
        Called for the ambulance
The ambulance came and ran over a dead cat
And very nearly killed the poor thing.

  1. Mine was:
Ladies and Gentlemen: Hobos and tramps
Crossed eyed monkeys and three legged ants
Admission is free, pay at the door,
Pull up a chair and sit on the floor.
I will sit beside you so I can see behind you
to tell you a story I know nothing about!
One fine day in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight,
Back to back they faced each other,
Took out their swords and shot each other.
Now a deaf policeman heard the noise,
Came and shot the two dead boys.
And if you don’t believe my story..it’s true!
Go ask the blind man, he saw it too! 🙂

It’s like the telephone game..the more it is repeated the words change, but some of this stays the same. I think because it rhymes people get most of it right. It is one of my favorite childhood memories. I always memorized Mother Goose rhymes too. It’s one of the best parts of being a kid!
    🙂
